ISSUE 20: 27th June, 2025
Principal Message
Gospel Reflection
This week’s Gospel reminds us of the power of love, mercy, and forgiveness. Jesus shares the parable of the two debtors, showing that those who are forgiven much often love more deeply. As parents and carers, this is a beautiful reminder that our homes are not built on perfection, but on compassion and grace—especially in the messy, everyday moments.
Whether it’s offering patience during the morning rush or showing kindness after a tough day, it’s the small acts of love that shape a Christ-centred family.
These values aren’t just central to our Christian faith—they’re shared across many traditions. Mercy (rahma) is sacred in Islam, forgiveness (teshuvah) is foundational in Judaism, compassion (karuna) leads to peace in Buddhism, and in Hinduism, ksama (forgiveness) is one of the highest virtues.
No matter our background, the message is clear: lead with love, restore what’s broken, and nurture relationships that reflect the heart of God.

Dear Parents, Guardians, Staff & Students,
This Week at Sacred Heart
As Term Two draws to a close, we want to extend a heartfelt thank you to all staff, students, and families for your hard work, commitment, and support throughout the term. It’s been a busy one, filled with learning, growth, and plenty of memorable moments.
Today we celebrated our Sacred Heart Feast Day with great joy. The day began with a reflective and meaningful Eucharist, followed by lunch and a range of fun activities in family groups. A huge thank you to our community for your generous donations of food, clothing, bedding, and funds in support of St Vincent De Paul’s vital work—what a fantastic team effort!
We also thank the many parents and carers who attended our recent Program Support Group (PSG) meetings. Your engagement and thoughtful input continue to strengthen the strong partnerships between home and school that are so important to student success.
As we head into the school holidays, we wish everyone a safe, happy, and relaxing two-week break. Take the time to rest, recharge, and enjoy some well-earned downtime. We look forward to welcoming you all back in Term Three, refreshed and ready for another great term ahead!
2025 MILDURA EISTEDDFOD REPORT
We are delighted to celebrate the outstanding achievements of our students at the 2025 Mildura Eisteddfod. Their dedication, enthusiasm, and love for the performing arts were on full display across a range of categories, and their performances truly reflected the vibrant creative spirit of our school community.
Our Year Six Folk Group shone brightly, securing First Place in the Primary School Rock Band, Group or Ensemble section. Their energetic and polished performance captivated both the judges and the audience. In the same section, our Year 6 Rock Band earned an Honourable Mention, recognised for their confident stage presence and impressive musical skills.
In the choral divisions, our Senior Choir was awarded Second Place in the Grade Five and Six Choral Choir section. Their expressive and well-blended vocals demonstrated wonderful teamwork and musicality. Our Junior Choir also achieved Second Place in the Prep to Grade Two Choral Choir section with a delightful and joyful performance. Meanwhile, our Middle School Choir gave a heartfelt and enthusiastic performance in the Grade Three and Four Choral Choir section and were warmly acknowledged for their participation and effort, even though they did not receive a formal placing.
We were equally thrilled with the performance of our Year 3 Dance Group, who received an Honourable Mention in the Grades Three and Four School Dance section. Their beautifully choreographed routine displayed excellent timing, expression, and creativity.
We are so proud of all our students who took part in this year’s Eisteddfod. Their commitment to rehearsals and their focus on delivering high-quality performances was inspiring. Congratulations to each and every performer—you represented Sacred Heart with pride, passion, and excellence.

Missions:
Our Term 2 Mission fundraising efforts have come to an end and it is with gratitude and excitement that I can announce $2610 has been raised for the Missions of Peru and Fr Michael. An awesome $1015 was raised from the Banjos Pie/Donut Drive. The Middle Unit money line raised $209 and the Junior Unit Crazy Hair Day raised an impressive $242. Thanks to all school families who supported the Secondhand Book store with either donations or purchases. The Year 2’s did a great job of assisting each recess throughout last week and we were able to raise $600 which is credit to all who supported this Missions fundraiser. A special thanks to the Mootwingee children who counted almost $700 of coins earlier this week. In Term 3 we plan to hold the following fundraisers: Hotdog/Icecream Day and a pie at the footy on AFL Day. More information will come home next term.

Soup Kitchen:
We have had another busy term of supporting the Sacred Heart Soup Kitchen. Many school families and staff continue to volunteer their time and services to the SK. We thank Shannon Bush, Coomealla High School and Yunice Torrevillas for their generous dessert donations and all other families who have supported us with food donations throughout the term. Christ has no hands but ours, reminds us all that we are called to act with compassion and service to those in need.
If you have not seen the SK photo display in the office, please take the time to have a look.

Lost Property:
As we near the end of the term and Winter is really upon us, once again, the Lost Property boxes are overflowing with jumpers and jackets without names. I would like to remind families that if your child has lost their jumper or you simply need a spare one, please head to the boxes outside Mootwingee in the courtyard and have a look, find a jumper, take it home and name it! It is so much easier for me to return jumpers to their owner if they are named.
Thanks Chris Carmichael
Learning & Teaching
End of Semester 1 Reports are now available for parents to view on PAM. We commend our teachers for their dedication in preparing thoughtful and accurate summaries of each student’s learning journey so far. We encourage you to read the report with your child and discuss goals for the upcoming semester. These reports should be viewed alongside your child’s Seesaw Assessment Tasks, which provide samples of work assessed against the Victorian Curriculum. Parent-Teacher Interviews will be held next week, offering an opportunity to discuss your child’s progress in more detail.
Wellbeing
SWPBS
Our SWPBS focus this week continues to be “Being Respectful”
Respect is a big word, but it’s made up of small actions that make a big difference! At school, showing respect means treating others the way you want to be treated. It helps everyone feel safe, happy, and ready to learn.
Here are some ways respect shows up at school:
Listening When Others Talk - When your teacher is speaking or a classmate is sharing, show respect by listening quietly. It means you care about what they have to say.
Using Kind Words - Words are powerful! Saying “please,” “thank you,” and “excuse me” shows you’re thinking about others' feelings.
Following Rules - Classroom and school rules are there to help everyone learn and stay safe. Respect means following those rules, even when it’s hard.
Taking Turns and Sharing - Whether it’s a toy, a book, or a game at recess—sharing and taking turns shows that you value others.
Helping Others - If someone drops their books, feels left out, or needs help understanding something, being kind and offering help is a respectful thing to do.
Taking Care of School Property - Respecting your school means keeping it clean, using supplies gently, and picking up after yourself.
When one person shows respect, others usually follow. So be the one who starts it—your actions can inspire your whole class!

A Special Report: Eating Anxiety
The complexity of eating anxiety stems from a combination of social, psychological, and environmental factors. Young people may develop this anxiety due to social pressures related to eating in front of others, fears about body image, or due to more ingrained issues such as eating disorders. Additionally, cultural norms or dietary restrictions can also play significant roles, as can direct experiences like bullying or teasing related to food choices or eating habits.
Whilst not a formally recognised condition, eating anxiety is a genuine and often overwhelming experience that can significantly hinder a young person's ability to participate in everyday activities comfortably. This condition can lead to serious nutritional deficiencies and social withdrawal, impacting overall health and academic performance.
Recognising and addressing eating anxiety is crucial for parents, carer, and educators. Through education, policy changes, and community support, we can help young people manage their anxieties and improve their relationship with food, thereby enhancing their overall well-being and social interactions.
This Special Report will help you understand how best to support a child experiencing anxiety around eating.
We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this Special Report, and as always, we welcome your feedback.
If you do have any concerns about the wellbeing of your child, please contact the school for further information or seek medical or professional help.

Foundation News
In literacy we have learnt the new sounds /w/ and /ck/. The sounds you will need to be continually practising at home are: m, s, t, a, p, i, n, f, r, o, c, h, d, e, g, l, k, u, b, j, w, ck and the tricky words: I, the, my, a, is, his, has, as. Now that we are learning and having to remember more sounds it is really important that the students can recognise and know each letter/sound automatically. It is not only important to practise reading words with these sounds but also writing with them too. We have had a big focus on sentence writing and ensuring our sentences start with a capital letter and end with a full stop.
In Mathematics we have continued our unit on Data. This has been a lot of fun for students as they have an understanding on what data is and how we can collect it. For Religion we are learning about the ‘do’ when caring for the environment. Check out how we practise growing seeds!!

We are looking forward to the NAIDOC celebrations next week. Next Friday we will bring home our dot painting artwork and handwriting.
Year One News
In Numeracy we have been exploring measurement concepts through hands-on activities. Students revised language to describe length using comparison words like "longer" and "shorter," and practised ordering and comparing objects by size. Students then used informal units, such as connecting cubes, to measure and compare lengths. We also revised our learning of volume and capacity. Students used terms like "full," "empty," and "half full" to describe and compare containers. They learned to compare how much space different objects take up and explained their thinking using real-life examples.

In Science this term, the students have been investigating observable changes that occur in the sky and on the land. We have seen some beautiful photos that students have shared of different landscapes in Show and Tell. The Year One students have built an understanding of the Sun’s path in the sky and the appearance of the Moon and stars at night. We have also learnt how to identify daily and seasonal changes in the weather. Throughout the last part of the term the students have been focusing on Biological Sciences. We have been involved in some really thoughtful and deep discussions about how living things live in different places that suit their needs. We have designed bird feeders that we will create next week using plastic recyclable bottles to encourage birds to thrive during the cold winter months.
In Health we have been learning all about dental health. They enjoyed reading stories and having discussions about how to care for their teeth, including how often we should brush and the correct technique to use. As part of their learning, students created fun chatterboxes with dental health tips, completed a word find, and made portraits of themselves with big smiles—complete with open mouths to show their teeth! They also added a toothbrush and toothpaste to their portraits to help demonstrate proper brushing. It was a fun and engaging way to reinforce the importance of looking after our teeth!
We are absolutely thrilled to share that Miss Galvin and her fiancé Matt are expecting a baby in December! Congratulations to you both on this wonderful journey — we are overjoyed for you and can’t wait to meet your precious little one. Wishing you all the love, health, and happiness during this special time!
Please note that Mrs Groves will be away for the first two weeks of Term 3. During this time, Mrs K will be teaching Amaroo.
Upcoming Term 3 Dates:
Week 2:
Monday - Thursday: Swimming Program at Mildura Waves
Friday: Grandparents Day (Book those Grandparents or special Friends in)
Week 5: Book Week with Dress up day on Friday
Week 6: Athletics Day
Our sincere thanks for the time and guidance that you have provided your child with to enhance academic skills. We are extremely proud of all our Year One students and are appreciative of your communication and support over this Semester.
Wishing you and your family a safe, restful, and fabulous holiday break!

Year Two News
Earlier this week in our Science Unit “What happens when we mix things together?” we made predictions about the changes that would happen to materials/ingredients when they were combined. We then followed a recipe to make playdough and the children were lucky enough to take a ball of ‘school made’ playdough home.

On Thursday, as a conclusion to our Science/Chemistry Unit we did another three experiments: Paper towel Wiggly Worm, Mini Tornado and Shaving Cream painting. There was so much excitement during this time but loads of learning, predicting and experimenting as well. A fun time for all!

At the end of Term, we will be sending home with your child their Semester 1 Workbook, Term 2 handwriting and Term 2 Maths worksheets. These will not need to be returned to school, however you are encouraged to take the time to look through your child’s work and celebrate their efforts and successes with them. Over the term, children have been busy adding to Seesaw, samples of their work in all curriculum areas and many photos. As always, you are invited to add comments to your child’s posts.
Thanks Chris & Wendy
Year Three News
In literacy this week, students have been learning to use transition words to show time and order in their writing. Students had fun writing about ‘How to eat an oreo cookie.’
During maths, students have enjoyed putting their mapping skills to practice, creating symbols and mapping out their classroom!
Next week, students will be finishing their watercolour animals in visual arts.
Congratulations to all the students in Narooma on their wonderful assembly performance!
We hope you have a great weekend!

MISSIONS: The Middle Unit Money Line and Crazy Hair Day activities raised $210. Thank you to those who contributed.
Worthy News:We wish Adaline M from Myalla all the best as she competes in an international dance competition which is currently happening in Barcelona. We look forward to hearing all about your wonderful experience.
End of Term: At the end of Term, we will be sending home with your child their Semester 1 Literacy Book, and Term 2 Maths worksheets.
Maths: This week we have been learning about recording the outcomes of chance experiments, making predictions, conducting chance experiments and representing results in a data table. One of our activities was conducting a chance experiment by rolling a six-sided dice 100 times. In their groups they had to keep track of how many rolls they competed and work out their particular role in the experiment. Included are some photos of this activity. At the end, Ivy P exclaimed, “That was intense!”
Enjoy this weekend,
Natalee & Cathryn

Year Five News
This week in Visual Arts, students began exploring perspective and depth in artworks. They learned about horizon lines and vanishing points, and have started creating their own art pieces to experiment with these techniques. It’s been wonderful to see their creativity and enthusiasm as they bring depth and dimension to their work!

In Literacy, students have been thoroughly engaged in learning about the early Australian Gold Rush. Last week, they wrote Single Paragraph Outlines (SPOs) about its early beginnings in 1851.
This week, students stepped into the shoes of early gold miners, imagining what it was like to endure the harsh conditions and the devastation of the Eureka Stockade. They are currently working on writing letters from the perspective of these miners and are looking forward to sharing their finished pieces with you next week.
DATES FOR NEXT TERM:
Friday 8th August - Barramunga Assembly - Term 3, Week 3
Year Six News
This week, students have been putting their collaborative and creative thinking skills to the test during an exciting Inquiry challenge. Working in small groups, they were tasked with designing, building, and testing a solution to minimise the effects of a natural disaster. From tsunami walls and houses on stilts to floating homes with balloons and even underground shelters, the innovative designs were both impressive and imaginative. It was great to see students working together so effectively and supporting one another throughout the challenge.

Library
This week we have “Meg and Mog” and “Elmer the Elephant” books on feature! The Foundation students in Minga enjoyed meeting Meg and Mog when Mrs Pacher read it to them a few weeks ago and now they are bringing lots of joy to many students, and staff who fondly remember Meg and Mog from when they were little.

With NAIDOC week being celebrated nationally during the holidays, we also have many books (both picture story books and novels) on display by First Nations authors, featuring First Nations characters and or our beautiful country. Students are welcome to borrow these books for the holidays to enjoy and enhance their understanding of the culture of First Nations people.

The library has been a popular place to escape the cold weather during break times. Students come in to read, chat quietly, play boardgames, create with Lego and even finish off work!

School Hats
It is school policy that hats should be worn from September 1st until May 1st whenever the children are outside at recess or lunch. Outside these times the wearing of a school hat is based upon the forecast UV rating. Foundation children have a light blue hat so that they are easy to identify in the playground.
Shoes
Parents are asked to give special attention to the shoes children wear to school. The uniform regulations specify black leather shoes. There are many styles on the market that fit this description, however parents are urged to avoid shoes that feature coloured stripes, logos or any other coloured decoration. Unless specifically authorised, (e.g. on Physical Education days) sneakers are not to be worn.
Socks
Specific attention is also drawn to the colour of the socks to be worn as part of the general uniform: pale blue for girls, grey for boys. Sacred Heart sports socks or plain white sports socks (with no logos or markings) are to be worn as part of the Physical Education uniform.
School Uniform Purchase
The Uniform Shop is run independently to the school through Totally Workwear. The shop is located at 87 Lime Ave, Mildura (Ph. 03 5021 4697).
Second Hand Uniform Shop
The Parents and Friends (P&F) operate a Second Hand Uniform shop. Opening hours are usually during our School Assembly times. All items for sale are donated and all proceeds go directly to the P&F to support our school. An order form is placed on our website https://www.shmildura.catholic.edu.au/school-uniform .
School Bags
School bags with the school emblem printed on them are available for purchase from Totally Workwear but are not compulsory.
Library Bags
All students require a Sacred Heart Library Bag (ordered through Totally Workwear) which is used to protect books borrowed from school as well as newsletters and other correspondence.
Lost Property
Please label ALL UNIFORM ITEMS with your child’s name. Lost property can be retrieved from breezeway between the courtyard and Olive Grove and if left unclaimed, will be donated to the second hand uniform shop.
Hair, Jewellery, Nail Polish & Make-Up
Students should keep their hair neat and tidy. Long hair that may cover the eyes must be tied back in a ponytail, plait, or similar style—this applies to both boys and girls. Hair accessories should be in the school colors: pale blue or navy blue.
Jewellery is generally not part of the school uniform, with a few exceptions:
- Earrings: Only plain studs (no glitter or dangling styles), with one stud per earlobe. No other piercings are allowed.
- Religious Medals: May be worn on a chain or pin but must be safe for play.
Nail polish and make-up are not allowed as part of the school uniform.
Arriving and Leaving Safely
Kiss & Go
To help keep everyone safe during drop-off and pick-up please take note of the following rules at Kiss and Go and the School Crossing that should be followed both in the morning (8:10-8:45am) and afternoon (3pm-3:30pm):
- Stay in your vehicle unless you need to assist younger students with their seat belts.
- Aim to keep your car in the Kiss & Go area for a maximum of two minutes to allow others to use the space too.
- Access the Kiss & Go only from Olive Grove, not 12th Street.
- Please refrain from dropping off students outside of cars in Olive Grove.
- Avoid performing U-turns within the Kiss & Go area.
- For your safety, use the school crossing if you need to cross 12th Street.
Thanks for helping us keep our school safe for everyone!

Pick Up and Drop Off Points
In the mornings, the Olive Grove gate will remain closed, so students and visitors can only enter through the 12th Street or Tamarisk Grove gates. After school, only the Olive Grove gate near the Art House will be open and supervised by a staff member. This change aims to enhance student and traffic safety.
Please ensure you find a suitable and permissible parking spot for your car in order to use these locations.

Riding Scooters & Bikes
Certain students walk, ride bikes, or scooters to school and are requested to use either the 12th Street entrance or the Tamarisk Grove entrance at the rear of the oval. Riding into or through the school grounds is not permitted.
Collect Children from School Grounds
Feel free to come into school to pick up your child directly from their classroom. It's an excellent opportunity to meet other parents, have casual conversations with teachers, and ensure your child is organised at the end of the day. If you choose this option, please park appropriately and be outside the classroom by the 3.10 bell; otherwise, your child will be directed to the supervised Kiss and Go area. Students and young siblings should refrain from using the playground equipment.
School Crossings
Students walking home are advised to use the school crossings on Twelfth Street, Walnut Avenue and Eleventh Street to safely avoid heavily trafficked roads. All crossings are supervised by a School Crossing Supervisor, and it's crucial to follow their directions. We also encourage parents to model expected behaviours by using the School Crossings also.
Buses
Several of our students catch buses home from the St. Joseph’s bus stop on 11th Street. Each day a teacher gathers these children together and accompanies them to the bus stop to supervise until they are all safely on the bus.
Drop Off Times
Preferred 'Drop Off' Time: 8.25 - 8.45 am. For safety reasons, please refrain from dropping off students before 8.19 am, as there is no supervision provided. Our gates open at this time.
Pick Up Times
Recommended 'Pick Up' Time: 3.10 - 3.25 PM. While we understand occasional delays, if regular or extending beyond 3.30 PM, please consider enrolling your child/ren in After School Care.
Walking or Riding Home
If your children walk or ride home or to your workplace after school, please submit written permission authorising them to leave unaccompanied. They must exit through the main 12th Street gate or accompany the 11th Street bus group through Tamarisk Grove.
Alternative Pick Up Places
For safety, we strongly advise against arrangements where children wait unsupervised at public pick-up locations like Walnut Avenue or St Joseph’s College.
EATING AND DRINKING AT SCHOOL
Healthy Eating
To sustain learning and promote healthy eating we encourage students to bring to school predominantly healthy food choices.
Brainfood
Students have a brain food break during the morning to keep children’s brains fuelled for learning. We ask that families send an extra fresh fruit or vegetable snack for children to have during this time. When sending the snack, please pack it separately from your child’s lunch in a small, named container so it can be placed on their desk each morning.

Lunch Snack
The main meal of the school day; a sandwich or roll, a salad or a slice of quiche. A healthy ‘treat’ may also be appropriate here that is healthy and gives long-term energy. Lunch is eaten usually in the classroom from 11:25am-11:40am.

Recess Snack
We encourage parents to pack fresh fruit or vegetables in your child’s recess snack box. You may like to pack one or two other snack items for them at this time. This snack is eaten at 1:40pm.

Packing Food
The school has a bank of refrigerators for the storage of students’’ food. For the ease of packing and unloading the fridges, we ask that parents provide separate, small, well-labelled containers or zip-lock bags for their child’s recess snack and lunch. Insulated ‘puffy’ lunchboxes and ice-blocks are not required.

School Canteen
Our School Canteen operates on a Wednesday and Friday and provides a range of lunch options at low cost. The current menu and prices can be accessed through and ordered via the CDFpay. This app is powered by Flexischools and you will need to create an account. Please download the CDF Pay App and ensure you create an account (the previous CDFPay doesn't transfer over to the app).
