Gospel Reflection
This Sunday, we celebrate the Ascension of the Lord—Jesus’ return to the Father after His resurrection. In Luke’s Gospel, Jesus promises the disciples that they will be "clothed with power from on high" and sends them out to be His witnesses to the ends of the earth. It’s a moment of both letting go and stepping forward—a reminder that faith is not just about looking up, but about reaching out. As parents, educators, and companions on our children’s faith journey, we’re called to do the same: to lead with hope, live with purpose, and share God’s love in the everyday moments of life. May we embrace this mission with joy, courage, and trust in the Spirit who walks with us.

Dear Parents, Guardians, Staff & Students,
This Week at Sacred Heart
What a big and brilliant week we’ve had at Sacred Heart!
On Monday, our Year 1 students had their Stayback, and not even the wild, dusty weather could dull the fun. From swimming and dancing to games, a movie and a delicious dinner cooked by Mrs Avery, it was a fantastic experience. Huge thanks to our Year 1 team for creating such a memorable night!
Tuesday’s School Closure Day gave our teaching staff the chance to engage in deep reflection and learning around the DOBCEL Strategy 2035. It was a valuable time to align our vision and consider how we continue to grow as a faith-filled, future-focused learning community.
Thursday saw our students shine at the SSV District Netball and Soccer—with both our boys’ and girls’ netball teams taking the win! A big congratulations to all involved.
We were proud to have several students represent Sacred Heart in the School Sports Victoria (SSV) State Selection trials this week. Congratulations to Scarlett Pike, Evie Tucker, and Indi Rodi, who travelled to Shepparton for netball tryouts, and to Max O’Callaghan, who took part in football trials in Melbourne. Each of them represented our school with pride, and we look forward to hearing if they progress to the final round of selection next week.
And today, our Year 2 students have been enjoying their Adventure Day! After starting bright and early with breakfast at school, they headed off to Jaycee Park and Ten Pin Bowling for a day full of fun and laughter. We look forward to hearing all about the evening activities when students are picked up at 9pm. A big thank you to our Year 2 team for organising such a wonderful experience!
A great week of learning, connection and community—well done everyone!

Sacrament of Confirmation
This weekend, we hold in prayer our students who will be receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation. This is a significant step in their faith journey, as they are strengthened by the gifts of the Holy Spirit and called to live out their beliefs with courage, compassion, and commitment. We thank families, sponsors, teachers, and parish leaders who have supported and guided our young people in preparing for this special moment. May it be a joyful celebration and a lasting reminder of God’s presence in their lives.
We wish the following students receiving their Sacrament of Confirmation all the best over the weekend:
- Friday 30th May @ 6pm: Harrison Jeffreys-Shepherd, Emma Curran, Sophie Roberts & Hannah Cirillo
- Saturday 31st May @ 6pm: Nicholas Cavallo, Rueben Farnsworth, Mason Frasca, Sophie Mobilio, Sam Mobilio, Sevanna Panuccio, Jasmin Pike & Logan Pike.
- Sunday 1st June @ 9am: Eli Argiro, Jack Clohesy, Ilario Frasca, William Groves, Stella Kourdis, Audrey Marciano, Roman Scullino, Izzy Waters & Poppy Zaxos
- Sunday 1st June @ 5pm: Caterina Bajer, Ryan Chirayth, Veronika Krivec, Franceska Krivec & Veida O’Brien
Pupil Free Day
This Friday is a Pupil Free Day as our staff engage in an important day of reflection and planning in preparation for our upcoming School Improvement Review, scheduled for the 6th and 7th of August. During the day, we’ll be analysing school data, celebrating our strengths, and identifying areas for growth. This process will help us shape three key improvement goals that we hope will be affirmed during our review—and will guide our next chapter of growth at Sacred Heart.
Working Together: Communication Between Families and Teachers
At Sacred Heart, we deeply value the partnership between home and school. Maintaining open and respectful communication is essential to supporting your child’s learning and wellbeing. While brief conversations at pick-up or drop-off are always welcome, they’re not always the best time for in-depth discussions. For more detailed matters, we kindly ask families to book a time with the class teacher.
Please note that meetings may not always be available immediately, but teachers will do their best to find a suitable time as soon as possible. To support teacher wellbeing, we encourage their written communication and meetings occur during their work hours. As a general guide, teachers will respond to parent emails within 24–48 hours. If more time is needed to consider or consult on an issue, you may receive an initial response to acknowledge your message.
Thank you for helping us maintain strong, supportive partnerships—where both staff and families feel respected, valued, and connected.
Breakfast Club – Tuesdays & Thursdays
We’re pleased to offer Breakfast Club each Tuesday and Thursday morning! Toasties will be available from the canteen between 8:30am and 8:45am for any students who’d like a warm bite to eat before school starts. All students are welcome!
Sports Update
Congratulations to Scarlett Pike, Evie Tucker and Indi Rodi who travelled to Shepparton this week to participate in the SSV state selections tryouts for netball. The girls represented the school with pride and will find out next week if they progress to the final selection tryout.
Mission Month – Fundraising with Purpose Across the Year
In 2025, we’re taking a more balanced approach to our fundraising efforts by spreading them out across the year, rather than concentrating everything in October. Each class will have one or two opportunities before the end of this term to fundraise in support of our missions, helping students stay engaged and allowing families to contribute meaningfully without feeling overwhelmed.
As always, all funds raised will go toward supporting Fr. Michael McKinnon’s missionary work overseas. Money raised will be presented in October. Thank you for your continued generosity and for helping our students live out their faith through action.
Mildura Eisteddfod
Best of luck to our Primary School Rock Band who will be performing at the Mildura Eisteddfod this Friday from 11am at the Mildura Arts Centre. The students have put in a huge amount of effort rehearsing and refining their sound, and we’re so proud of their creativity, confidence, and commitment. A special thank you to Mr Barbary for supporting and leading the band in preparation for this exciting opportunity.
Foundation 2026 Enrolments – Still Open
While the official enrolment period for Foundation 2026 closes this Friday, May 30th at 4pm, we will remain open for applications beyond this date as we have not yet filled all available places. We encourage current families to apply via the school website if they haven’t already done so. If you know of any new families considering Sacred Heart for their child, please pass this information along—we’d love to welcome them into our school community.

Learning & Teaching
At Sacred Heart, we value strong partnerships between parents and teachers. Clear, respectful communication plays a vital role in supporting your child’s learning and wellbeing.
To help maintain healthy boundaries and ensure every message receives the attention it deserves, please keep the following in mind when contacting your child’s teacher:
- Appointments Required: If you'd like to meet with a teacher, please discuss with the teacher to book a time through email, phone call or face to face. This ensures we can give you our full attention and support.
- Email During School Hours: Teachers are available to respond to emails between 8:30 AM – 4:30 PM (Mon–Wed) and 8:30 AM – 3:30 PM (Thurs–Fri). Responses may not be immediate, but we will reply as soon as possible.
- Monday Evenings are set aside for scheduled parent meetings.
- Respecting Confidentiality: We approach all student concerns with care and confidentiality; we cannot discuss other children and families. Please trust that your child’s teacher is working in your child’s best interest.
- Purposeful Meetings: Meetings are scheduled with a clear focus and aim to find solutions—these are not spaces for venting, but for productive collaboration which is a minuted process.
We appreciate your support as we work together to create a safe, respectful, and nurturing school environment for all students.
Wellbeing
Our second cycle of wellbeing interventions will begin next week, families with children participating will have been notified via PAM.
At Sacred Heart we currently offer the following wellbeing interventions:
MESH (Mental, Emotional, Social, Spiritual Health)
These groups empower individuals to:
- deal with their situations, thoughts and concerns in a safe environment,
- develop healthy communication skills,
- identify and express feelings appropriately
- learn to treat themselves and others with respect and dignity
- learn that we are responsible for our own lives and based on our choices, have the power to change.
- Rock & Water
Rock and Water is a course that is delivered over a number of lessons to students in primary or high school. A series of exercises and games are practised to develop confidence and self-reflection. The games are diverse and many have a martial arts origin. The program has a strong appeal to students who enjoy the active nature of the many games and drills. Students learn to stand strong, negotiate using “rock” or “water” verbal approaches, walk away from trouble, consider alternatives to aggression, and develop understandings about who they are, their intuitive feelings and their personal direction.
Social Stencil
Social Stencil is designed to build respect and understanding of one another, with the support of facilitators who model inclusive and encouraging language, while building the group’s shared understanding of complex emotions, friendship concepts, and skills that can help them manage conflict with others.
Students will:
- Explore the enormous range of emotions that human can show and feel and intricacies and overlap between them
- ‘The Science of Anger’ -how anger happens in the body and what next?
- Friendship concepts, styles and variations
- Working in groups respectfully and effectively
- Understanding why conflict happens
- Strategies for managing real-life problems and conflicts with others
Students are recommended by their teacher for participation in these groups. However, If you believe your child would benefit from attending one of these groups please email Fiona Pike fpike@shmildura.catholic.edu.au or Sam Lowe slow@shmildura.catholic.edu.au.
Schools TV
A Special Report: Shaping Healthy Masculinity
In today's fast-moving world, many boys are struggling to find direction. Even well-meaning online searches about fitness, confidence or relationships can lead them to content that promotes rigid or unhealthy ideas about masculinity. The critically acclaimed TV show 'Adolescence' has brought fresh attention to this issue, highlighting how boys are often exposed to messages that glorify toughness and dominance, while dismissing empathy and emotional openness.
These outdated beliefs can limit emotional growth and impact how boys relate to others - with real consequences in schools, homes and communities. That's why it's more important than ever to guide boys with care, clarity and connection.
By offering healthier role models, safe spaces to talk, and encouraging respectful friendships - especially across genders - we can help boys develop the confidence, empathy and relationship skills they need to thrive.
This special report calls for a cultural shift and advocates for curiosity-driven dialogue that builds trust and critical thinking. The goal is to raise boys who are not just resistant to harmful influences, but actively capable of questioning and rejecting them.
We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this Special Report, and as always, we welcome your feedback.
If you do have any concerns about the wellbeing of your child, please contact the school for further information or seek medical or professional help.
Here is the link to your special report:
SWPBS
This year we would like to review the values, behaviours and expectations of our school Matrix to ensure it remains current to our needs. Parent feedback is very important in reviewing these expectations. Please take the time to complete the following survey to assist with this review. SWPBS Matrix Review
Our SWPBS focus this week is “Being and good role model & Friend”
Being a Good Friend at School
Celebrate Differences
Everyone’s brain is different—and that’s awesome! Be kind and curious about how others like to talk, play, or hang out.
Practice Consent & Boundaries
Always ask first. Respect when someone says “no” or needs space.
Be Flexible & Patient
Plans change. People have different needs. That’s okay! Understanding helps friendships grow.
Use Inclusive Communication
Friendship can be talking, drawing, smiling, waving, or just sitting together. All ways are valid.
Lift Each Other Up
Say kind things, cheer for your friends, and notice what they do well.
When Friendship Feels Hard
It’s okay if a friendship doesn’t work out. Talk to a trusted adult, set boundaries, and remember—you deserve kindness and respect.
Resilience Project
This week students will continue to explore the concept of Empathy through their Resilience Project lessons. Students will explore how empathy involves noticing and responding to the emotions of others. Through discussion, acting and craft, students will build their understanding of different emotions and learn to identify the emotions of others through observing their facial expression, attitude and body language, clarity of tone of voice and emotional behaviour.
Learning Diversity
PSG Meetings
This term PSG meetings for students receiving substantial and extensive adjustments across the school will occur on June 25th & 26th. PSG meetings for students receiving supplementary adjustments will occur at a time scheduled by the classroom teacher throughout the term. This may be in person or via phone.
General News

Reminder - The second hand uniform shop is open during assembly times, which is fortnightly (the shop can be found in the stadium next to the stage) - eftpos and cash welcome. You can place your order in advance using the link below. You will get a text message from the school when it is ready.
SHEC -Sacred Heart Environmental Committee
Last week we completed an audit of what was in our school rubbish bins. Our results clearly demonstrated that not everyone in the school understands which bins to use and why it is important to use the correct bin. This week we are going to work as a team to solve this problem.
Foundation News
Well done to all Foundation students on completing another week at school. This week we have begun Counting and Place Value for Mathematics. We have learnt some new counting games and are developing an understanding of numbers that come before and after. We finished up our Integrated Studies unit on ‘The Changing Environment’ and completed our assessment task- make sure to keep an eye out on Seesaw! We have had so much fun in Social and Emotional Learning where we explored mindfulness through listening to our surroundings; we even made our own elephant ears to help! Students also painted a rock for someone in the class based on what friendship traits they believed that person had. Foundation students had lots of fun explaining to the person why they gave them that colour. Check out some photos from this week's learning

The sounds you will need to be continually practising at home are: m, s, t, a, p, i, n, f, r, o, c, h, d, e, g and the tricky words: I, the, my, a, is. Now that we are learning and having to remember more sounds it is really important that the students can recognise and know each letter/sound automatically. Continue using the fluency charts at home to build on automaticity.

Mission Lolly Jar Guessing Competition:
Starts Monday the 2nd of June and finishes on Friday the 13th of June. For 50c a guess, Foundation students can take a guess at how many lollies are in their class lolly jars.
Reminders:
- School starts at 8:45am each day. If you are at school after 8:45am you must sign your child in at the office.
- Your child’s library bag needs to be at school every day - kept in their school bag.
- Practise the sounds caterpillars and snakes and fluency chart each night.
- Read and record ‘Enhanced Comprehension’ and ‘Reader’ in the reading diary each night.

Year One News
Year One Stayback
A heartfelt thank you to all the Year One parents for your support in preparing your children for the recent Stayback event. It was a wonderful experience filled with fun and friendship! From cupcake decorating to splashing around at Waves, rocking our fabulous tie-dye t-shirts, enjoying a pasta feast, dancing the night away with glow sticks, and winding down with a cosy movie night — the fun never stopped. Despite the strong winds and dust storm, the children demonstrated impressive resilience, excellent behaviour, and strong social skills throughout the day making it a day full of memories, laughter, and learning with friends. We are incredibly grateful to our dedicated staff and supportive families for helping make this a memorable and meaningful experience for our Year Ones. The scrumptious dinner was warmly received by our students and catered by Mrs Avery. THANK YOU MRS AVERY!

Year Two News
What an Adventure Day we are having today! This is what we have done so far; we arrived at 7:30am and were very excited to start our day. A yummy breakfast was enjoyed and then we jumped on the bus to head down to Jaycee Park for a wonderful play! After that we headed off to Ten Pin Bowling where we all tried our very hardest to knock down those pesky pins! Back to school hungry and ready for our delicious lunch of nuggets and chips. After Mootwingee’s Assembly we will continue our day into the night! Phew, the teachers are tired already but the children have loads of energy and enthusiasm! We would like to say a HUGE thanks to Cass & Dave Circosta from Banjos for their generosity towards Sacred Heart. They donated all the hamburger rolls for our dinner and all the bread for our breakfast. We are incredibly grateful for their continued support and if you are looking for some super fresh bread/rolls or even a delicious donut, head down to Banjos in Ninth St and give them your support. Thanks Chris & Wendy

Mootwingee Assembly: Mrs Carmichael & Miss Cheek were incredibly proud of all the Mootwingee children with their commitment to learn their reading for our class Assembly today. All children used the microphone well and delivered their reading fluently and clearly. The class did an awesome job learning the actions to our “Gotta Sing, Gotta Pray” song and performed like SUPER STARS on the stage. Congratulations to all children on a SUPER DOOPER job today in front of the whole school and many parents. Thanks also to the parents who supplied our yummy afternoon tea to share.

Year Three News
We can’t believe we’re already at the end of Week 6! We have had another wonderful week.
In Maths, students have been working hard learning about money and practising how to calculate change. In Humanities, we’ve loved exploring the importance of storytelling in First Nations cultures and how these stories are deeply connected to Country.
During Religion, our thoughtful class discussions focused on how Catholic Christians are called to respond when people are excluded, showing kindness and inclusion in our daily lives. We’ve also been busy creating our classroom posters - Allowing Others to Learn - together, reminding everyone that our learning space is a place where everyone can grow and succeed.
As the cooler weather sets in, please remember to send a named jumper with your child to help keep them warm during the day.
Several students still do not have working headphones at school. Please check with your child and, if needed, send a pair to school for classroom use. Thank you for your support!
This coming week, on Thursday 5th June, Year Three are having a crazy hair and money line day for our Mission Month Fundraiser. Students are encouraged to be super creative with their hair and be as crazy as they can. We also ask that all students bring some loose change to school to place on the money line.

Year Five News
On Monday, students explored the power of solar energy by building and testing their very own solar ovens. The aim was to harness the sun's heat to cook delicious smores. Unfortunately some poor weather and the in coming dust storm hindered our results, but like true scientists, the students discussed the importance of variable conditions when performing scientific experiments. Hopefully we can try again on a sunnier day.

In Religion, we have been learning about the Beatitudes and making connections to our contemporary lives. For example, we discussed how 'Blessed are the peacemakers' can inspire us to resolve conflicts calmly and show kindness to others, even when it's challenging. Ask your child which Beatitude they connected with most and why.
Congratulations to our students who participated in the SSV Soccer and Netball games yesterday. All teams showed great sportsmanship and both our Boys and Girls A netball teams will progress to the next round.

Please make sure children are wearing a jumper to school, especially now the chilly mornings have set in.
A look ahead:
Friday 6th June - Pupil Free Day
Monday 9th June - King's Birthday Holiday
Wednesday 18th June - Senior Unit Choir Eisteddfod
Friday 8th August - Barramunga Assembly - Term 3, Week 3
Have a great weekend.

School Hats
It is school policy that hats should be worn from September 1st until May 1st whenever the children are outside at recess or lunch. Outside these times the wearing of a school hat is based upon the forecast UV rating. Foundation children have a light blue hat so that they are easy to identify in the playground.
Shoes
Parents are asked to give special attention to the shoes children wear to school. The uniform regulations specify black leather shoes. There are many styles on the market that fit this description, however parents are urged to avoid shoes that feature coloured stripes, logos or any other coloured decoration. Unless specifically authorised, (e.g. on Physical Education days) sneakers are not to be worn.
Socks
Specific attention is also drawn to the colour of the socks to be worn as part of the general uniform: pale blue for girls, grey for boys. Sacred Heart sports socks or plain white sports socks (with no logos or markings) are to be worn as part of the Physical Education uniform.
School Uniform Purchase
The Uniform Shop is run independently to the school through Totally Workwear. The shop is located at 87 Lime Ave, Mildura (Ph. 03 5021 4697).
Second Hand Uniform Shop
The Parents and Friends (P&F) operate a Second Hand Uniform shop. Opening hours are usually during our School Assembly times. All items for sale are donated and all proceeds go directly to the P&F to support our school. An order form is placed on our website https://www.shmildura.catholic.edu.au/school-uniform .
School Bags
School bags with the school emblem printed on them are available for purchase from Totally Workwear but are not compulsory.
Library Bags
All students require a Sacred Heart Library Bag (ordered through Totally Workwear) which is used to protect books borrowed from school as well as newsletters and other correspondence.
Lost Property
Please label ALL UNIFORM ITEMS with your child’s name. Lost property can be retrieved from breezeway between the courtyard and Olive Grove and if left unclaimed, will be donated to the second hand uniform shop.
Hair, Jewellery, Nail Polish & Make-Up
Students should keep their hair neat and tidy. Long hair that may cover the eyes must be tied back in a ponytail, plait, or similar style—this applies to both boys and girls. Hair accessories should be in the school colors: pale blue or navy blue.
Jewellery is generally not part of the school uniform, with a few exceptions:
- Earrings: Only plain studs (no glitter or dangling styles), with one stud per earlobe. No other piercings are allowed.
- Religious Medals: May be worn on a chain or pin but must be safe for play.
Nail polish and make-up are not allowed as part of the school uniform.
Arriving and Leaving Safely
Kiss & Go
To help keep everyone safe during drop-off and pick-up please take note of the following rules at Kiss and Go and the School Crossing that should be followed both in the morning (8:10-8:45am) and afternoon (3pm-3:30pm):
- Stay in your vehicle unless you need to assist younger students with their seat belts.
- Aim to keep your car in the Kiss & Go area for a maximum of two minutes to allow others to use the space too.
- Access the Kiss & Go only from Olive Grove, not 12th Street.
- Please refrain from dropping off students outside of cars in Olive Grove.
- Avoid performing U-turns within the Kiss & Go area.
- For your safety, use the school crossing if you need to cross 12th Street.
Thanks for helping us keep our school safe for everyone!

In the mornings, the Olive Grove gate will remain closed, so students and visitors can only enter through the 12th Street or Tamarisk Grove gates. After school, only the Olive Grove gate near the Art House will be open and supervised by a staff member. This change aims to enhance student and traffic safety.
Please ensure you find a suitable and permissible parking spot for your car in order to use these locations.

Riding Scooters & Bikes
Certain students walk, ride bikes, or scooters to school and are requested to use either the 12th Street entrance or the Tamarisk Grove entrance at the rear of the oval. Riding into or through the school grounds is not permitted.
Collect Children from School Grounds
Feel free to come into school to pick up your child directly from their classroom. It's an excellent opportunity to meet other parents, have casual conversations with teachers, and ensure your child is organised at the end of the day. If you choose this option, please park appropriately and be outside the classroom by the 3.10 bell; otherwise, your child will be directed to the supervised Kiss and Go area. Students and young siblings should refrain from using the playground equipment.
School Crossings
Students walking home are advised to use the school crossings on Twelfth Street, Walnut Avenue and Eleventh Street to safely avoid heavily trafficked roads. All crossings are supervised by a School Crossing Supervisor, and it's crucial to follow their directions. We also encourage parents to model expected behaviours by using the School Crossings also.
Buses
Several of our students catch buses home from the St. Joseph’s bus stop on 11th Street. Each day a teacher gathers these children together and accompanies them to the bus stop to supervise until they are all safely on the bus.
Drop Off Times
Preferred 'Drop Off' Time: 8.25 - 8.45 am. For safety reasons, please refrain from dropping off students before 8.19 am, as there is no supervision provided. Our gates open at this time.
Pick Up Times
Recommended 'Pick Up' Time: 3.10 - 3.25 PM. While we understand occasional delays, if regular or extending beyond 3.30 PM, please consider enrolling your child/ren in After School Care.
Walking or Riding Home
If your children walk or ride home or to your workplace after school, please submit written permission authorising them to leave unaccompanied. They must exit through the main 12th Street gate or accompany the 11th Street bus group through Tamarisk Grove.
Alternative Pick Up Places
For safety, we strongly advise against arrangements where children wait unsupervised at public pick-up locations like Walnut Avenue or St Joseph’s College.
EATING AND DRINKING AT SCHOOL
Healthy Eating
To sustain learning and promote healthy eating we encourage students to bring to school predominantly healthy food choices.
Brainfood
Students have a brain food break during the morning to keep children’s brains fuelled for learning. We ask that families send an extra fresh fruit or vegetable snack for children to have during this time. When sending the snack, please pack it separately from your child’s lunch in a small, named container so it can be placed on their desk each morning.

Lunch Snack
The main meal of the school day; a sandwich or roll, a salad or a slice of quiche. A healthy ‘treat’ may also be appropriate here that is healthy and gives long-term energy. Lunch is eaten usually in the classroom from 11:25am-11:40am.

Recess Snack
We encourage parents to pack fresh fruit or vegetables in your child’s recess snack box. You may like to pack one or two other snack items for them at this time. This snack is eaten at 1:40pm.

Packing Food
The school has a bank of refrigerators for the storage of students’’ food. For the ease of packing and unloading the fridges, we ask that parents provide separate, small, well-labelled containers or zip-lock bags for their child’s recess snack and lunch. Insulated ‘puffy’ lunchboxes and ice-blocks are not required.

School Canteen
Our School Canteen operates on a Wednesday and Friday and provides a range of lunch options at low cost. The current menu and prices can be accessed through and ordered via the CDFpay. This app is powered by Flexischools and you will need to create an account. Please download the CDF Pay App and ensure you create an account (the previous CDFPay doesn't transfer over to the app).
