Gospel Reflection

In this Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus encourages us to “be dressed for action and have your lamps lit,” reminding us to live each day with readiness, purpose, and faith. As parents and carers, life is often filled with the unexpected—early mornings, busy evenings, and everything in between. But Jesus’ words are an invitation to stay present and faithful in the small, everyday moments. Whether it's a kind word, a quiet prayer, or simply showing up with love and patience, these are the ways we keep our lamps burning. May we continue to walk in trust, ready to share light, even when the path ahead is uncertain.

        Missions:

Fr Michael McKinnon’s recent Shared Table newsletter from Yanaoka, Peru has arrived and teachers will have shared the information and stories from this newsletter with the children in their class during the week. A hard copy will come home for you which will create an opportunity for your child to share their new understandings and knowledge with you.

Through Mrs Marion Guthrie, I also received an email and photos from Ive Aviles Bonilla who works as a Non-Government Organization representative in Cayara & Huancapi, Peru. The photos showed some recent projects that have been set up from our Sacred Heart school donations through our fundraising from 2024. Translated from Spanish, Ive said “Please say ‘salude’ or hello to the teachers and children of Sacred Heart in Mildura. These photos are of the work we have done in Cayara/Circarmarca (school). The community is so grateful for your help”.

This shows that our generous support can in turn, feed families and give the poor an opportunity to grow and develop as healthy productive members of their communities. It gives these people purpose and most importantly, enhances their human dignity.

        Soup Kitchen:

Last Monday Sacred Heart School cooked and served at the Parish Soup Kitchen. As always our students were respectful, helpful, happy, polite and well supported by their parents. We had many positive comments from the clients about the children’s behaviour and friendliness. Myself, together with the staff present, were incredibly proud of all these children.

The 22 clients were served with  soup, roast and vegetables followed by chocolate self saucing pudding for dessert. This delicious meal was prepared by some of our generous SH staff members and the children from Coomealla High School.

Throughout the year, many school children (from Prep-Year 6) and their parents have been a part of the Soup Kitchen and after their shift, have been asking when they can come back and do it again. This is a sign of our school community’s desire to help the poor, the elderly, the unemployed, the homeless and those less fortunate than ourselves through our social justice focus.

Thanks to those families who have confirmed their availability for your upcoming rostered shift. If you have not done this yet, please send me an email ccarmichael@shmildura.catholic.edu.au

Many thanks to all involved so far this year.

        Learning and Teaching

At Sacred Heart we strive to ensure that we are using current evidence-based pedagogy.   This week our Foundation and Year One students participated in a pilot Encoding Study, seeking to find the most reliable and effective tool for testing spelling in these year levels. Our Community Leaders completed a Mathematics PD aligned with the Grattan Institute Report- The Maths Guarantee. Two examples of how we are constantly seeking to refine our practise to maximise student growth.

        SWPBS

This week our SWPBS focus will be on bullying and unkind behaviour.

National Bullying No Way Week: Standing Together Against Bullying

This week, our school proudly joins schools across Australia in recognising National Bullying No Way Week — a vital campaign that reminds us all that bullying has no place in our school or community.

Bullying can take many forms, including physical, verbal, social, and online (cyberbullying). Regardless of how it appears, bullying causes harm and affects not only the people involved but the broader school environment. That’s why this week, we’re focusing on respect, inclusion, and kindness.

It’s also important to understand the difference between bullying and unkind behaviour. While both are hurtful and not acceptable, bullying is more than just a one-off act of meanness. Bullying is repeated, targeted behaviour where someone is trying to have power over another person. Unkind behaviour, on the other hand, may happen once or be accidental — but it’s still important to address. At our school, we believe in treating every person with kindness and respect, and we work to support students in resolving all types of conflict or unkindness in positive ways.

Throughout the week, students will be participating in a range of activities that promote positive relationships and teach practical strategies for standing up against bullying in their classrooms including participating in Kids Help Line largest anti bullying online lesson

Our school is committed to creating a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment for everyone. We want every student to feel valued, respected, and empowered to speak out if they or someone they know is being bullied.

Parents and caregivers, you play a crucial role too. Talk to your child about what bullying is, how it affects others, and encourage open conversations. Let them know that they can always talk to a trusted adult at school.

Let’s continue working together — students, teachers, and families — to say Bullying. No Way!

        Schools TV

In this edition of SchoolTV - Bullying

Bullying is an ongoing or repeated misuse of power in relationships, with the intention to cause deliberate psychological harm. Bullying behaviours can be verbal, physical or social. It can happen in person or online, via various digital platforms and devices and it can be obvious or hidden. Bullying in any form or for any reason can have immediate, medium and long-term effects on those involved, including bystanders.

Despite the efforts made to reduce bullying behaviours, the research tells us that one in four students still report being bullied every few weeks. However, not all negative behaviour should be considered bullying. The key difference is that bullying does not stop on its own. It’s important young people learn how to identify behaviours that are rude, behaviours that are mean, and behaviours that are related to bullying.

Often the reasons for bullying can be complex. Some young people do it to get approval from others, some do it to regain control, whilst others may do it because it makes them feel safe. Supporting young people as they work through their emotions will help them unpack the motivation and reason behind the behaviour.

In this edition of SchoolTV, caregivers can better understand why some young people engage in bullying behaviours and what to do to support a child experiencing it.

We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this edition of SchoolTV and we always welcome your feedback. If you have any concerns about your child, please contact the school counsellor for further information or seek medical or professional help.

                Foundation News

1.0.0 D.A.Y.S of S.C.H.O.O.L…. What a blast! On Friday, the prep students had the best day celebrating their 100th day of school. Students made biscuits, a crown and did some 100 days Math. They looked amazing in their 100-year-old people costumes. We even got to meet Evelyn Smith who was a former teacher at Sacred Heart who recently celebrated her 100th birthday. The rest of the week was normal with athletics training, subtraction, learning our new digraph /ch/ and reading stories from the Old Testament of the Bible.

                Some reminders:

                • Sounds to continue practising with your child/ren at home: s, a, t, p, i, n, m, r, f, o, c, d, h, e, n, g, l, k, u, b, j, w, ck, ll, ff, ss, sh, qu, ee, z, zz, ch
                • Learn all the tricky words at the back of the reading diary.
                • Next fortnight's Show & Tell (Friday’s) with the topic ‘a photo of you and your grandparent/s. Talk about what you like to do with your grandparents.

                Until next week!

                Rebecca & Hayley

                Year One News

Last Friday was a truly special day as we came together to celebrate our Grandparents’ and Special Friends' Mass. The atmosphere was filled with warmth, gratitude and connection. It was uplifting to witness the many positive conversations and the strong sense of community that unfolded throughout the day. A heartfelt thank you to all the families who contributed to our shared morning tea—your delicious offerings were greatly appreciated and helped make the occasion even more memorable.

This week, students revised known sounds and explored new ways to spell the /or/ sound, including the grapheme aw. We played games like How Many Sounds and That’s Awesome to build phonemic awareness. Students also continued working with the suffix -ed to show past tense, singing our catchy -ed song and using it in sentences. We focused on short vowel sounds and were introduced to our helpful friend FLoSS, who reminded us when to double letters at the end of words. Tricky word practice and word reading rounded out a fun and engaging week of literacy. Please continue to practise tricky words at home. Regular reading and writing of these words helps build your child’s confidence and fluency.

In Numeracy, students focused on building number fluency through games, hands-on activities, and place value exploration. We revised numbers to 100, solved problems using addition and subtraction, and practised explaining our thinking. Using base-10 blocks and numeral expanders, students explored how numbers are made from tens and ones. We investigated the number 100 in different ways and used number charts to spot patterns, describe numbers, and strengthen our understanding of place value.

Today we recognised Australia’s first Saint, Mary MacKillop, on her Feast Day and acknowledged the important part that she has played in our history. She famously said, ‘Never see a need, without doing something about it’ and ‘Find happiness in making others happy’, which are terrific messages to draw from.

                Show and Tell

Week 4 - What are some objects that can be pulled, stretched, scrunched and still stay the same shape? - Linked to Physical Science.

                Year Two News

The Nangare assembly will be held in the stadium on Friday 22nd August. The following letter was sent home today with all children with their words attached, so they can practice at home. We will also be using our Show and Tell time to practice at school for the next two weeks.

In our Geography lesson next week we will be learning about the journey that a letter takes from the sender to the recipient. We will discuss how important it is that a letter has the correct postal address in order to avoid delays or confusion. To assist us, we are asking all parents to complete the slip with your child’s postal address and return it back to the classroom. Thanks in anticipation

                Chris & Wendy

                Year Four News

WOW-What a week we have had in Year Four!

Well done to our Year Four students for their participation in the swimming program this week. It was evident that while most had good skills, they were learning to do some things better.

Belated welcome to Ava who began at Sacred Heart last week in Illawarra. We also thank Mrs Kilpatrick for her time with Illawarra during the first two weeks of the term.

On Wednesday, we were presented with a very informative talk from MASP about ‘Homelessness’

Many students were fortunate to be given a prize for answering questions correctly or asking interesting questions. The students came away with an improved understanding of what homelessness is and some of the reasons people find themselves homeless. We were invited to make donations of non-perishable food or household and clothing items to make life easier for those who find themselves homeless. Any donations to MASP would be gratefully accepted.

Well done to all the students who prepared and presented a speech to be considered as their class’ Semester Two Class Captain. Congratulations to Billie (Myalla) and Ivy (Illawarra) who were elected as their class’ Semester Two Captains.

This week, our Year 6 students have been working hard during Literacy and Integrated Studies as they research an Asian country or city to create an informative poster. Using a checklist to guide their work, students have been enthusiastically gathering facts and translating their findings into well-structured paragraphs. It’s been wonderful to see them apply their understanding of SPO (Single, Paragraph, Outline) and experiment with a variety of sentence types to produce engaging, informative posters. We look forward to sharing their finished products with you on SeeSaw.

On Tuesday, students also took part in a guest presentation from MASP about homelessness in the Mildura region. It was great to see them actively engaged throughout the session, answering questions thoughtfully and asking insightful, relevant questions of their own.

We’re excited to announce the cast and soundtrack for this year’s School Concert production, Indiana Joan and the Raider of the Lost Relics. The story follows the fearless Indiana Joan, played by Stella W, and her loyal sidekick Sammy, brought to life by Jackson M. Our talented understudy, Grace P, is ready to step in at any moment.

Throughout the adventure, each year level will transport the audience to a new and exciting location through song. Year 6 will launch us into the action with Shakira’s Waka Waka (This Time for Africa), followed by Year 2’s rhythmic Walk Like an Egyptian by The Bangles. These incredible performances will be recorded during Week 8 and produced into a short movie. School Hats

It is school policy that hats should be worn from September 1st until May 1st whenever the children are outside at recess or lunch.  Outside these times the wearing of a school hat is based upon the forecast UV rating.  Foundation children have a light blue hat so that they are easy to identify in the playground.

                Shoes

Parents are asked to give special attention to the shoes children wear to school.  The uniform regulations specify black leather shoes.  There are many styles on the market that fit this description, however parents are urged to avoid shoes that feature coloured stripes, logos or any other coloured decoration.  Unless specifically authorised, (e.g. on Physical Education days) sneakers are not to be worn.

                Socks

Specific attention is also drawn to the colour of the socks to be worn as part of the general uniform: pale blue for girls, grey for boys.  Sacred Heart sports socks or plain white sports socks (with no logos or markings) are to be worn as part of the Physical Education uniform.

                School Uniform Purchase

The Uniform Shop is run independently to the school through Totally Workwear. The shop is located at 87 Lime Ave, Mildura (Ph. 03 5021 4697).

                Second Hand Uniform Shop

The Parents and Friends (P&F) operate a Second Hand Uniform shop. Opening hours are usually during our School Assembly times. All items for sale are donated and all proceeds go directly to the P&F to support our school.  An order form is placed on our website https://www.shmildura.catholic.edu.au/school-uniform .

                School Bags

School bags with the school emblem printed on them are available for purchase from Totally Workwear but are not compulsory.

                Library Bags

All students require a Sacred Heart Library Bag (ordered through Totally Workwear) which is used to protect books borrowed from school as well as newsletters and other correspondence.

                Lost Property

Please label ALL UNIFORM ITEMS with your child’s name. Lost property can be retrieved from breezeway between the courtyard and Olive Grove and if left unclaimed, will be donated to the second hand uniform shop.

Hair, Jewellery, Nail Polish & Make-Up

Students should keep their hair neat and tidy. Long hair that may cover the eyes must be tied back in a ponytail, plait, or similar style—this applies to both boys and girls. Hair accessories should be in the school colors: pale blue or navy blue.

Jewellery is generally not part of the school uniform, with a few exceptions:

                • Earrings: Only plain studs (no glitter or dangling styles), with one stud per earlobe. No other piercings are allowed.
                • Religious Medals: May be worn on a chain or pin but must be safe for play.

Nail polish and make-up are not allowed as part of the school uniform.

                Arriving and Leaving Safely

                Kiss & Go

To help keep everyone safe during drop-off and pick-up please take note of the following rules at Kiss and Go and the School Crossing that should be followed both in the morning (8:10-8:45am) and afternoon (3pm-3:30pm):

                • Stay in your vehicle unless you need to assist younger students with their seat belts.
                • Aim to keep your car in the Kiss & Go area for a maximum of two minutes to allow others to use the space too.
                • Access the Kiss & Go only from Olive Grove, not 12th Street.
                • Please refrain from dropping off students outside of cars in Olive Grove.
                • Avoid performing U-turns within the Kiss & Go area.
                • For your safety, use the school crossing if you need to cross 12th Street.

Thanks for helping us keep our school safe for everyone!

Pick Up and Drop Off Points

In the mornings, the Olive Grove gate will remain closed, so students and visitors can only enter through the 12th Street or Tamarisk Grove gates. After school, only the Olive Grove gate near the Art House will be open and supervised by a staff member. This change aims to enhance student and traffic safety.

Please ensure you find a suitable and permissible parking spot for your car in order to use these locations.

                Riding Scooters & Bikes

Certain students walk, ride bikes, or scooters to school and are requested to use either the 12th Street entrance or the Tamarisk Grove entrance at the rear of the oval. Riding into or through the school grounds is not permitted.

                Collect Children from School Grounds

Feel free to come into school to pick up your child directly from their classroom. It's an excellent opportunity to meet other parents, have casual conversations with teachers, and ensure your child is organised at the end of the day. If you choose this option, please park appropriately and be outside the classroom by the 3.10 bell; otherwise, your child will be directed to the supervised Kiss and Go area. Students and young siblings should refrain from using the playground equipment.

                School Crossings

Students walking home are advised to use the school crossings on Twelfth Street, Walnut Avenue and Eleventh Street to safely avoid heavily trafficked roads. All crossings are supervised by a School Crossing Supervisor, and it's crucial to follow their directions.  We also encourage parents to model expected behaviours by using the School Crossings also.

                Buses

Several of our students catch buses home from the St. Joseph’s bus stop on 11th Street. Each day a teacher gathers these children together and accompanies them to the bus stop to supervise until they are all safely on the bus.

                Drop Off Times

Preferred 'Drop Off' Time: 8.25 - 8.45 am. For safety reasons, please refrain from dropping off students before 8.19 am, as there is no supervision provided.  Our gates open at this time.

                Pick Up Times

Recommended 'Pick Up' Time: 3.10 - 3.25 PM. While we understand occasional delays, if regular or extending beyond 3.30 PM, please consider enrolling your child/ren in After School Care.

                Walking or Riding Home

If your children walk or ride home or to your workplace after school, please submit written permission authorising them to leave unaccompanied. They must exit through the main 12th Street gate or accompany the 11th Street bus group through Tamarisk Grove.

                Alternative Pick Up Places

For safety, we strongly advise against arrangements where children wait unsupervised at public pick-up locations like Walnut Avenue or St Joseph’s College.

                EATING AND DRINKING AT SCHOOL

                Healthy Eating

To sustain learning and promote healthy eating we encourage students to bring to school predominantly healthy food choices.

                Brainfood

Students have a brain food break during the morning to keep children’s brains fuelled for learning. We ask that families send an extra fresh fruit or vegetable snack for children to have during this time. When sending the snack, please pack it separately from your child’s lunch in a small, named container so it can be placed on their desk each morning.

                Lunch Snack

The main meal of the school day; a sandwich or roll, a salad or a slice of quiche. A healthy ‘treat’ may also be appropriate here that is healthy and gives long-term energy.  Lunch is eaten usually in the classroom from 11:25am-11:40am.

                Recess Snack

We encourage parents to pack fresh fruit or vegetables in your child’s recess snack box.  You may like to pack one or two other snack items for them at this time.  This snack is eaten at 1:40pm.

                Packing Food

The school has a bank of refrigerators for the storage of students’’ food. For the ease of packing and unloading the fridges, we ask that parents provide separate, small, well-labelled containers or zip-lock bags for their child’s recess snack and lunch. Insulated ‘puffy’ lunchboxes and ice-blocks are not required.

                School Canteen

Our School Canteen operates on a Wednesday and Friday and provides a range of lunch options at low cost.    The current menu and prices can be accessed through and ordered via the CDFpay.  This app is powered by Flexischools and  you will need to create an account.  Please download the CDF Pay App and ensure you create an account (the previous CDFPay doesn't transfer over to the app).
