Gospel Reflection
In this Sunday’s Gospel (John 21:1-19), the risen Jesus appears to His disciples, sharing a simple meal and reminding them of their mission to love and care for others.
As parents, we are called to live out that same love in our daily lives—through kindness, patience, and encouragement. May we continue to be signs of hope and joy for our children and one another this Easter season.

Dear Parents, Guardians, Staff & Students,
Weekly Update
It’s been a fantastic start to Term 2, with students settling back into school life with great energy and enthusiasm.
Last Friday, our student leaders represented Sacred Heart proudly at the ANZAC Day Commemorative Service at Henderson Park — a wonderful reflection of the respect and maturity we see growing in our young leaders.
A big thank you to our Foundation and Junior Unit teachers, LSOs, and families for your support of the Junior Unit STOMP Extravaganza. Our students shone on stage with their dancing, and their excellent behaviour made the event a true celebration of joy and teamwork. Thank you also to the staff who joined in the fun at the STOMP Disco — it was a brilliant night for everyone involved!
This week, we kept the momentum going with a fantastic Cross Country event. Congratulations to all students for your outstanding performances, determination, and the encouragement you showed to your fellow runners. A special shoutout to Mr. Burford for his organisation of the day, and to the many parents who came along to cheer. Congratulations to Murray for winning the Gordan Casey Perpetual Shield, and to all of our place-getters across the different age groups. What a wonderful celebration of school spirit, effort, and teamwork!

Promotional Video
As part of our enrolment promotion, we’re excited to share our new Sacred Heart promotional video, showcasing the wonderful opportunities and vibrant community spirit our school offers.
A big thank you to all the students, staff, and families who contributed to bringing this video to life! We encourage everyone to share and support this initiative as we continue to grow a positive and welcoming presence in the wider community.

SSV Division Cross Country
The School Sports Victoria (SSV) Division Cross Country will take place this Tuesday at the Aerodrome Ovals starting at 9:50 am. We extend our best wishes to our students who have qualified for this event.
Mothers Day Stall
Our Mother’s Day Stall is being held on Friday. Classes will be called to shop for a $5 gift for Mum during this time. Payments can be made through CDF Pay or in cash. Parent helpers are needed from 8:30am to 11am. Contact the office to volunteer your time.
GRIP Leadership Conference
Mr. O’Callaghan and the Student Leadership Team will participate in the GRIP Leadership Conference this Wednesday at the Grand Hotel. This event offers targeted training for student leaders, emphasizing immediate action and practical skills. We aim for our leaders to gain clarity and inspiration for their roles as senior student leaders at Sacred Heart.
School Hats
Students are no longer required to wear hats during break times. This presents a good chance to wash and store the hats conveniently for retrieval in September when they will be required again.
Cold Weather Dress Code
As the weather cools, it's important for students to dress warmly to stay healthy. Please remember to wear the winter uniform on chilly days. Avoid wearing tights with summer uniform, and note that the navy blue weather-proof jacket does not substitute for a jumper. Additionally, jackets cannot be worn in classrooms, so wearing a jumper is still recommended.
God Bless!
Mr Mark Gibson

Learning & Teaching
Term 2 Overviews of Learning
We are pleased to share the Term 2 Overviews of Learning with our school community. These documents outline the key areas of study for each year level. We encourage all families to engage in conversations with their children about their learning experiences, as ongoing support at home plays an important role in student success.
Supporting Excellence in Literacy
This week, our Learning Community Leaders have been visiting classrooms to observe literacy lessons. These observations help us reflect on and strengthen our teaching practices, ensuring we continue to provide the best possible learning experiences for our students. We are also hoping to soon capture some of the outstanding practices we see by filming elements of classroom learning in literacy. These examples will be shared with other schools across our Diocese, highlighting the great work happening in our community and support deep collaboration between schools.
Changes to Mathematics Reporting - Semester 1 2025
As part of the implementation of the updated Victorian Curriculum, all schools are required to change the way Mathematics will be reported on in Semester 1, 2025. These changes aim to provide clearer, more detailed information about your child’s progress and achievement in key areas of mathematics. Further details about these updates are outlined in the attached letter.

A Special Report: Respectful Language
In today’s world, it is common to hear socially offensive language on the streets, on social media channels, streaming services and in some forms of modern music. While swearing is becoming more common and less taboo, the use of derogatory language or the act of swearing at someone, or about someone, is a form of verbal violence. It transgresses the usual rules of social interaction by impinging on an individual’s self-image and sense of dignity.
It is becoming apparent that some young people are being influenced by the language they hear. Proliferating the use of swear words can sometimes normalise, glamorise and desensitise their impact for kids who may misunderstand the true meaning of some derogatory terms. Whilst some students may use swearing or derogatory terms as a misguided attempt at belonging, others may use it simply because they are still learning how to moderate their language and are not accustomed to making adjustments to suit different situations.
Although many schools enforce a zero-tolerance policy when it comes to swearing and derogatory language, parents need to also play an important part in enforcing this approach. Parents and carers can be proactive in monitoring what their children are viewing or being exposed to. Discussing the use of words or the origin of some derogatory terms and gaining insight into the reason behind their child’s use of such language can help prevent inappropriate or disrespectful language filtering into the classroom or the school yard, which is turn helps to build more tolerant, safe and connected communities.
This Special Report offers a number of guidelines to help manage a suitable approach when discussing the importance of respectful language.
We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this Special Report, and as always, we welcome your feedback.
If you do have any concerns about the wellbeing of your child, please contact the school for further information or seek medical or professional help.

SWPBS
This week our SWPBS focus “Allow others to learn”
At Sacred Heart, we strive to create a respectful and focused learning environment where every student has the chance to grow academically and socially. One important way we do this is by practicing respectful classroom behavior—especially during teacher-directed learning time.
Teacher-directed learning is when the teacher is leading a lesson, giving instructions, or guiding the class through a new concept. This time is essential for building foundational knowledge, setting expectations, and helping all students stay on track.
When students call out or interrupt during this time, it breaks the flow of the lesson, distracts classmates, and can make it harder for everyone to focus and understand the material. It can also prevent quieter students from feeling comfortable participating and showing what they know.
We're reminding students to:
- Raise their hands and wait to be called on.
- Listen actively when someone else is speaking.
- Use positive body language to show they’re engaged.
- Respect the speaker, whether it’s a teacher or a classmate.
You can support this at home by:
- Talking about the importance of listening and turn-taking.
- Practicing polite conversation skills at the dinner table.
- Encouraging your child to share how they show respect in class each day.
When students learn to listen, wait their turn, and speak thoughtfully, it doesn’t just help in the classroom—it sets them up for success in every part of life.
Together, let’s continue to build a calm, caring, and respectful learning community!
Resilience Project
Students are continuing to build on their knowledge of emotions and feelings in TRP this week. Each year level will have a slightly different focus or setting where a range of different factors might influence our feelings and provide some strategies to help students identify their feelings.
Mother's Day Stall

Our Mother’s Day Stall will be held on Friday 9th May and students will be able to purchase an item from the stall for $5. Parents can make payment through CDF Pay (which has been set up) or some may choose to bring in cash. Children will come as a class to the stall and choose from a range of items that will be available. If you are free and would like to help we will require parent helpers on the stall between 8:30am & 11am, please contact the office and leave your contact details and the time you are available. All money raised is used to purchase resources for your children.

Year One News
Term Two has begun with lots of fun activities and learning experiences.
Our Year One students had an incredible week rehearsing and preparing for the STOMP Night Extravaganza! Their hard work and enthusiasm shone through as they sang and danced the night away, celebrating alongside their classmates and families. It was heartwarming to see such a fantastic turnout and to share a lovely supper together afterwards. A big thank you to all the families who came along and supported this special event — your presence made it truly memorable!

Well done to all of the students on their effort and behaviour at Cross Country on Thursday . It was a wonderful morning with many smiles, acts of kindness and persistence shown by the Year One students.

We are all very excited for the Year One Stayback this term on Monday the 26th of May.
In preparation for the day, the students have made Tie Dye T-Shirts which they will wear on the day. Our day will be filled with lots of fun activities including cupcake decorating, walking to the Waves Pool in the afternoon, Seesaw activities, games on the oval and a delicious dinner.
Year One students have received their Show and Tell schedules at the beginning of the term and Show and Tell starts Monday. Week 3 Topic - an achievement I am proud of.

Year Five News
Students were welcomed back to Term Two with a flurry of events.
Last week students completed independent research projects on the ANZACs. They thoroughly enjoyed learning about ANZAC Day, the meaning of symbols used in commemoration and what life was like in the trenches as a soldier. Students had the opportunity to present their work in a variety of ways. It was great to see so many creative talents shine.

Earlier this week students enjoyed our STOMP disco and we saw some exceptional air guitar skills.

Congratulations to all students who participated in yesterday’s Cross Country. This event requires lots of resilience and perseverance. Participating students should be proud of their efforts. Students who qualified for the next stage brought home notes yesterday with all relevant information.

Our current maths unit is ‘Multiplicative Thinking’. Students automatically knowing their times tables helps reduce cognitive overload and helps them to explore more complex equations and problems. Please encourage or help your child practice their times tables every night.
Our new Science Unit is ‘Earth and Space Science’. Students will be reading and writing about the planets and our solar system in both Literacy and Inquisitive lessons. This week students wrote their own mnemonics to learn the order of the planets. Ask your student to share theirs!

Please note: Barramunga Assembly will be 08/08/25 - Term 3, Week 3

First Aid
Concussion

Welcome back to term 2!
As winter sports commence please be aware of concussion protocols advised from DOBCEL.
Important note in regards to concussions:
If a child has experienced concussion outside of the school setting it is important that they rest for a period of 24 to 48 hours and then gradually return to activities after this time. Returning to school can be a graduated approach with the aim of increasing tolerance to a full day, the same situation could occur with sporting activities. It is always important to check with your doctor and seek medical treatment after a child sustains a concussion.
It is important to inform the school if your child has sustained a concussion outside of school; this is to ensure the school can monitor your child’s wellbeing and adapt activities as required.
This factsheet link below from the Royal Children’s Hospital is valuable to read and understand.
https://www.rch.org.au/kidsinfo/fact_sheets/Head_injury_return_to_school_and_sport/
There is also a great evidence-based app from the Murdoch children’s research institute that walks you through what to do in the result of a concussion.

School Hats
It is school policy that hats should be worn from September 1st until May 1st whenever the children are outside at recess or lunch. Outside these times the wearing of a school hat is based upon the forecast UV rating. Foundation children have a light blue hat so that they are easy to identify in the playground.
Shoes
Parents are asked to give special attention to the shoes children wear to school. The uniform regulations specify black leather shoes. There are many styles on the market that fit this description, however parents are urged to avoid shoes that feature coloured stripes, logos or any other coloured decoration. Unless specifically authorised, (e.g. on Physical Education days) sneakers are not to be worn.
Socks
Specific attention is also drawn to the colour of the socks to be worn as part of the general uniform: pale blue for girls, grey for boys. Sacred Heart sports socks or plain white sports socks (with no logos or markings) are to be worn as part of the Physical Education uniform.
School Uniform Purchase
The Uniform Shop is run independently to the school through Totally Workwear. The shop is located at 87 Lime Ave, Mildura (Ph. 03 5021 4697).
Second Hand Uniform Shop
The Parents and Friends (P&F) operate a Second Hand Uniform shop. Opening hours are usually during our School Assembly times. All items for sale are donated and all proceeds go directly to the P&F to support our school. An order form is placed on our website https://www.shmildura.catholic.edu.au/school-uniform .
School Bags
School bags with the school emblem printed on them are available for purchase from Totally Workwear but are not compulsory.
Library Bags
All students require a Sacred Heart Library Bag (ordered through Totally Workwear) which is used to protect books borrowed from school as well as newsletters and other correspondence.
Lost Property
Please label ALL UNIFORM ITEMS with your child’s name. Lost property can be retrieved from breezeway between the courtyard and Olive Grove and if left unclaimed, will be donated to the second hand uniform shop.
Hair, Jewellery, Nail Polish & Make-Up
Students should keep their hair neat and tidy. Long hair that may cover the eyes must be tied back in a ponytail, plait, or similar style—this applies to both boys and girls. Hair accessories should be in the school colors: pale blue or navy blue.
Jewellery is generally not part of the school uniform, with a few exceptions:
- Earrings: Only plain studs (no glitter or dangling styles), with one stud per earlobe. No other piercings are allowed.
- Religious Medals: May be worn on a chain or pin but must be safe for play.
Nail polish and make-up are not allowed as part of the school uniform.
Arriving and Leaving Safely
Kiss & Go
To help keep everyone safe during drop-off and pick-up please take note of the following rules at Kiss and Go and the School Crossing that should be followed both in the morning (8:10-8:45am) and afternoon (3pm-3:30pm):
- Stay in your vehicle unless you need to assist younger students with their seat belts.
- Aim to keep your car in the Kiss & Go area for a maximum of two minutes to allow others to use the space too.
- Access the Kiss & Go only from Olive Grove, not 12th Street.
- Please refrain from dropping off students outside of cars in Olive Grove.
- Avoid performing U-turns within the Kiss & Go area.
- For your safety, use the school crossing if you need to cross 12th Street.
Thanks for helping us keep our school safe for everyone!

Pick Up and Drop Off Points
In the mornings, the Olive Grove gate will remain closed, so students and visitors can only enter through the 12th Street or Tamarisk Grove gates. After school, only the Olive Grove gate near the Art House will be open and supervised by a staff member. This change aims to enhance student and traffic safety.
Please ensure you find a suitable and permissible parking spot for your car in order to use these locations.

Riding Scooters & Bikes
Certain students walk, ride bikes, or scooters to school and are requested to use either the 12th Street entrance or the Tamarisk Grove entrance at the rear of the oval. Riding into or through the school grounds is not permitted.
Collect Children from School Grounds
Feel free to come into school to pick up your child directly from their classroom. It's an excellent opportunity to meet other parents, have casual conversations with teachers, and ensure your child is organised at the end of the day. If you choose this option, please park appropriately and be outside the classroom by the 3.10 bell; otherwise, your child will be directed to the supervised Kiss and Go area. Students and young siblings should refrain from using the playground equipment.
School Crossings
Students walking home are advised to use the school crossings on Twelfth Street, Walnut Avenue and Eleventh Street to safely avoid heavily trafficked roads. All crossings are supervised by a School Crossing Supervisor, and it's crucial to follow their directions. We also encourage parents to model expected behaviours by using the School Crossings also.
Buses
Several of our students catch buses home from the St. Joseph’s bus stop on 11th Street. Each day a teacher gathers these children together and accompanies them to the bus stop to supervise until they are all safely on the bus.
Drop Off Times
Preferred 'Drop Off' Time: 8.25 - 8.45 am. For safety reasons, please refrain from dropping off students before 8.19 am, as there is no supervision provided. Our gates open at this time.
Pick Up Times
Recommended 'Pick Up' Time: 3.10 - 3.25 PM. While we understand occasional delays, if regular or extending beyond 3.30 PM, please consider enrolling your child/ren in After School Care.
Walking or Riding Home
If your children walk or ride home or to your workplace after school, please submit written permission authorising them to leave unaccompanied. They must exit through the main 12th Street gate or accompany the 11th Street bus group through Tamarisk Grove.
Alternative Pick Up Places
For safety, we strongly advise against arrangements where children wait unsupervised at public pick-up locations like Walnut Avenue or St Joseph’s College.
EATING AND DRINKING AT SCHOOL
Healthy Eating
To sustain learning and promote healthy eating we encourage students to bring to school predominantly healthy food choices.
Brainfood
Students have a brain food break during the morning to keep children’s brains fuelled for learning. We ask that families send an extra fresh fruit or vegetable snack for children to have during this time. When sending the snack, please pack it separately from your child’s lunch in a small, named container so it can be placed on their desk each morning.

Lunch Snack
The main meal of the school day; a sandwich or roll, a salad or a slice of quiche. A healthy ‘treat’ may also be appropriate here that is healthy and gives long-term energy. Lunch is eaten usually in the classroom from 11:25am-11:40am.

Recess Snack
We encourage parents to pack fresh fruit or vegetables in your child’s recess snack box. You may like to pack one or two other snack items for them at this time. This snack is eaten at 1:40pm.

Packing Food
The school has a bank of refrigerators for the storage of students’’ food. For the ease of packing and unloading the fridges, we ask that parents provide separate, small, well-labelled containers or zip-lock bags for their child’s recess snack and lunch. Insulated ‘puffy’ lunchboxes and ice-blocks are not required.

School Canteen
Our School Canteen operates on a Wednesday and Friday and provides a range of lunch options at low cost. The current menu and prices can be accessed through and ordered via the CDFpay. This app is powered by Flexischools and you will need to create an account. Please download the CDF Pay App and ensure you create an account (the previous CDFPay doesn't transfer over to the app).
