ISSUE 9: 21st March, 2025
Principal Message
Gospel Reflection
This Sunday’s Gospel (Luke 15:1-3, 11-32) shares the Parable of the Prodigal Son, a powerful reminder of God’s endless love, mercy, and forgiveness. No matter how far we may stray, God is always ready to welcome us back with open arms.
As parents, this story encourages us to show patience, compassion, and unconditional love to our children, guiding them with kindness even when they make mistakes. May this Lenten season be a time of reconciliation and renewal as we grow in faith and love.

Dear Parents, Guardians, Staff & Students,
Weekly Update
With just two weeks left in Term One, it’s amazing to see the progress and strong connections we’ve built as a school community. Well done to our Year 3 and 5 students for completing their NAPLAN assessments—your hard work and effort are truly commendable!
It’s been a busy and vibrant week with Neuro-Diversity Week, Harmony Week, and St. Patrick’s Day on Monday. Students engaged in rich learning experiences within their classrooms, deepening their understanding of inclusion, cultural appreciation, and the diverse strengths that make our community special. From celebrating different ways of thinking to embracing our multicultural spirit, it’s been wonderful to see the enthusiasm and engagement across the school.
We extend our heartfelt thoughts and support to all those affected by the passing of Eli Madden-Andrews, a former student who touched many lives and will be deeply missed. Support remains available for students, and we encourage families to reach out if they have any concerns about their child’s well-being. Please keep Eli’s parents in your prayers as his funeral will be held on Friday at 10:30 AM at Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
Thank you to all parents and staff for your participation in this week’s PSG Meetings. With around 100 meetings held, your input is greatly valued as we work together to enhance student outcomes.
Let’s make these final weeks of term positive and productive
Kiss & Go Safety Reminder – Avoid Near Misses
To ensure the safety of all students and families, we kindly remind everyone to only enter the Kiss & Go zone from Olive Grove. There have been several near misses due to vehicles incorrectly accessing Kiss & Go from 12th Street, creating unsafe conditions during drop-off and pick-up.
Please follow these key Kiss & Go and School Crossing safety guidelines:
- Stay in your vehicle unless assisting younger children with seat belts.
- Keep your car in the Kiss & Go area for a maximum of two minutes to allow smooth traffic flow.
- Access Kiss & Go from Olive Grove only—do not enter from 12th Street.
- Do not drop off students outside of cars in Olive Grove.
- Avoid U-turns leaving the Kiss & Go area.
- If crossing 12th Street, always use the school crossing.
Your cooperation helps keep our school community safe—thank you for your support!

Journey Pole Painting
Our long held tradition of painting our class Journey Poles on the oval will occur on Tuesday and Thursday. Please ensure your children have packed an art smock or old shirt.
School Advisory Council Meeting
Our second SAC Meeting for 2025 will take place this Tuesday evening, starting at 5:15pm. We extend our gratitude to our 2025 parent representatives: Racheal Fyfe, Melissa Waters, Warren Henderson, Ben Tallent, Ben Chatfield and Katie McCoy.
School Sports Victoria (SSV) Division Cricket
Best wishes to our boys & girls Year 5/6 & Year 3/4 cricket teams all the best at this week’s T20 Cricket Division Finals. Games commence at 9.45am. All teams are playing on Friday at the Mildura Sporting Precinct.
School Assembly
Our next class led assembly will be hosted by Year 5 Waminda at 2:30pm on Friday. Following the assembly, Waminda parents are welcome to join an afternoon tea in their child's classroom, offering an opportunity to view student learning and meet other parents.
Mission Fundraising & Easter Raffle
This year, our Mission Fundraising will run across the whole year rather than being limited to Mission Month in October. Our first fundraiser will take place on the last day of Term One with a Crazy Hair Day and our Easter Raffle! Gold coin donations for Crazy Hair Day (suggested $1–$2 per child or $5 per family) and raffle tickets ($1 each) can be purchased via CDF Pay. A big thank you to families who’ve already donated Easter eggs—our 16 class and staff hampers are looking fantastic, with around 25 smaller prizes also up for grabs! Donations of Easter eggs are still welcome, and raffle tickets will be available until 8pm Thursday, April 3rd, with prizes drawn on Friday, April 4th. Thank you for your support!

All primary and lower secondary schools in Victoria are required to implement The F-10 Victorian Curriculum. At Sacred Heart, Classroom Teachers send home overviews which outline when the content of the curriculum will be taught throughout term. In addition to the classroom teachers, you are welcome to discuss any questions that you have about the curriculum; what we teach at Sacred Heart, with the Community Leaders:

Ensuring you have the correct information, prevents the spread of misinformation.
Learning Diversity
Thank you to all families who have attended a PSG (Program Support Group) meeting this week. We will conduct the last of these meetings next week and Minutes and ILP reports will be made available on PAM by Monday 31st March.
SWPBS
Our SWPBS focus this week is being inclusive. This aligns with our focus on neurodiversity week and harmony day.
At Sacred Heart, we pride ourselves on fostering a welcoming, inclusive, and respectful environment for everyone. We believe that every individual, regardless of race, ethnicity, or background, deserves to feel valued, supported, and safe. As part of our commitment to diversity and inclusion, we take a strong, stance on racial remarks and discrimination in any form.
Words matter. They carry the power to uplift, connect, and inspire. But they can also harm, exclude, and divide. Racial remarks, whether intentional or not, can deeply affect those who are targeted, often leaving emotional scars that are difficult to heal. Even seemingly small comments can contribute to a culture of exclusion and perpetuate harmful stereotypes. At Sacred Heart, we are committed to ensuring that everyone—students, staff, and the wider community—feels safe and respected.
We have a clear and firm policy when it comes to racial remarks and discrimination. This policy means that any form of racist language, jokes, or behavior will not be tolerated. Our goal is to ensure that all members of our community understand the impact of their words and actions and are held accountable for fostering a respectful environment.
Schools TV: In this edition of SchoolTV - Grief & Loss
Grief is a natural response to loss. It might be the loss of a loved one, relationship or even a pet. The more significant the loss, the more intense the grief is likely to be. Children and adults grieve differently due to their developmental stage, and this can prove difficult for parents to understand.
Young children fluctuate in and out of the stages of grief rapidly, as they may not comprehend the permanency of death. They express their grief more physically. Teens on the other hand may not know how to express their grief and will need some space to process their loss. Some may choose to grieve alone, not wanting to stand out or be seen as not coping. Whilst others, who may have a greater understanding, can start to question their own mortality.
In this edition of SchoolTV, parents can learn how to acknowledge their child’s feelings and the best way to support them through the grief.
We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this edition of SchoolTV and we always welcome your feedback. If you have any concerns about your child, please contact the school counsellor for further information or seek medical or professional help.

Foundation News
This has been the first week with take-home readers… and the students are doing an AMAZING job. Remember the reader is a decodable book which means the students will be able to use their sounds to read most of the words. If there are high-frequency sight (a, I, the) words in the book please tell them the word. Take-home reading books need to be read each night and returned to school the next day where the students will choose a new book. Before reading the book, complete the ‘warm up’ page with your child if it has one.

Take-home reading books need to be recorded in your child’s reading diary each day - reading diaries are returned to school every day. The picture below shows how you fill in the reading diary.

Check out our photos from our Easter Basket with our buddies.

Some quick reminders:
- Each morning the students need to do their jobs before finding something to do. They need to bring into the classroom their drink bottle, lunch container, snack container, brainfood container, reading book and diary.
- The ‘Enhanced Comprehension’ books are borrowed Monday and returned to school each Friday
- Read and record ‘Enhanced Comprehension’ and ‘Reader’ in the reading diary each night.
- Your child’s library bag needs to be at school every day - kept in their school bag.
- Brainfood needs to be a small fruit or vegetable snack that can be eaten in 5 minutes - cut up and in a small container.
- Keep an eye out for tasks added to Seesaw and let Rebecca or Hayley know if you are having any trouble in doing so. There have been a few over the last couple of weeks.
Year One News
On Monday, it was wonderful to see everyone dressed in green to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day! The Year One students had a fantastic time learning about the Patron Saint of Ireland and engaging in a variety of fun activities, including praying, singing, dancing, cookie decorating, and crafting.

In Literacy, we have been continuing our focus on reading and writing tricky words, understanding that these words cannot be sounded out. We appreciate your support in helping your child practice reading and writing these words at home. A copy of the tricky words can be found on page 15 of your child’s reader diary. So far, we have covered Sets 1, 2, 3, and 4.
In Maths, we have been exploring 2D and 3D shapes. The students have enjoyed identifying, comparing, and creating shapes in different ways. We have been discussing the shapes we see in our classroom and environment, learning how to describe them by their number of sides and vertices. The children worked in small groups to give each other clues and guess different shapes. They also created shapes on a geoboard and used hands-on materials to reinforce their learning.

Next week our classes are painting their designs on the room Journey Poles. Students will be provided with art smocks, but we also encourage them to bring in an old (oversized) shirt to double protect their clothes.
A huge thank you to all the families for the time and effort put into the wonderful Family Trees! The students were excited to share them and enjoyed talking about their families with their classmates.
We also appreciate the generous donations of Easter eggs and other items for our Mission fundraising hampers. If you haven’t yet contributed and would like to, donations are still welcome.
Thank you for your ongoing support!
Katrina and Brieanna
Year Two News
Year Two students had a lovely day celebrating St Patrick's Day! We learnt about the history of St Patrick, we made leprechaun headbands, danced some Irish Jigs and iced delicious green cookies! Check out a few photos here and keep an eye out for the Seesaw task which will include your child’s Term 1 Handwriting sample.

In Maths, we have been learning about the relationship between addition and subtraction, and creating fact families. Students have been consolidating their understanding of subtracting multiples of 10 from two digit numbers. Students have used various concrete materials to help work out subtraction problems. Here we used dominoes to create fact families.
History excursion:
As a conclusion to our History unit on “Learning about the Past: Significant People, Buildings and Local Sites” the Year Two students are looking forward to our excursion on Thursday April 3rd. We will travel by bus to the Old Mildura Homestead and to the Rio Vista house, fountain and gardens. Please read the note for further details and remember to complete the permission form on PAM prior to Monday 31st March.
Year Three News
On Wednesday we completed our final NAPLAN assessment. We were so proud of our children’s hard work!
We have also been busy learning about capacity: measuring in millilitres, estimating capacity and comparing different capacities.
Thanks to families who have already sent Easter egg donations for our Mission fundraising hampers.

Narooma - Celebrating St Patrick's Day

Year Four News
Thank you to all families who have contributed to the Easter raffle by sending along a great collection of eggs, rabbits and other yummy stuff. Although the Year Four children will be on camp, if anyone does happen to be lucky enough to have their name drawn and they don’t have a sibling at school to collect their prize, it will be waiting in the office area when we return.
We enjoyed wearing green on St Patrick’s Day and learning some things about St Patrick’s life as well as general things that happen around the world on St Patrick’s day.
Below are some photos of both Year Four classes on St Patrick’s Day.

Maths this week we have been learning about Two-Dimensional Shapes and Three-Dimensional Objects. We had fun using play-doh to create items following criteria that helped us learn some of the terms used to identify and name shapes such as vertices, straight and curved sides.
Here are some photos of our work.

Year Five News
What a wonderful and busy week we have had in Year 5. Turning green to celebrate St Patrick’s day was a great chance to learn a little more about St Patrick and his life story.
On Tuesday we enjoyed a fabulous day at St Joseph's College. The students participated in dance, drama and cooking lessons while also getting a chance to drive a HPV (Human Powered Vehicle) and challenge themselves on the climbing wall. Some students always displayed some amazing acts of kindness towards fellow Year 5 students from the other catholic primary schools. We look forward to another visit to SJC later in the year.

This week students have also completed their NAPLAN assessment. Students are to be congratulated on being “smarties”.
In Literacy students have been learning about the origins of Democracy and Australia’s journey towards democracy. Ask your child if they can recall a fun fact at home.
Tomorrow students complete their numeracy module on decimals and percentages. They are really enjoying the individualised learning in maths and enjoy seeing their results progress. Remember to continue to help your child to practice their timetables. Having a strong, automatic recall of these facts will help with all their numeracy learning.
A reminder to bring in something to contribute to the school Easter Hamper if you can.
Goodluck to the students attending the SSV Division T20 cricket next Friday.
Waminda assembly - 2:30pm. Parents and families are invited to join us in the classroom afterschool for afternoon tea. Students are asked to bring something small to share.
Year Six News
This week kicked off with a fantastic celebration of St. Patrick’s Day! The students learned about the history of Saint Patrick and his significance, and it was wonderful to see a sea of green as everyone embraced the free dress day.
In Religion, we have been exploring the Events of Holy Week, and it has been great to see the students actively engaging in creating timelines to demonstrate their understanding.
Our students also had a fantastic time working with their buddies this afternoon, creating fun Easter crafts together!
A quick reminder—there’s still time to contribute to our Easter Hamper if you can!
Wishing you all a wonderful week ahead!

Important note in regards to concussions:
If a child has experienced concussion outside of the school setting it is important that they rest for a period of 24 to 48 hours and then gradually return to activities after this time. Returning to school can be a graduated approach with the aim of increasing tolerance to a full day, the same situation could occur with sporting activities. It is always important to check with your doctor and seek medical treatment after a child sustains a concussion.
It is important to inform the school if your child has sustained a concussion outside of school; this is to ensure the school can monitor your child’s wellbeing and adapt activities as required.
This factsheet link below from the Royal Children’s Hospital is valuable to read and understand.
There is also a great evidence-based app from the Murdoch children’s research institute that walks you through what to do in the result of a concussion.

School Hats
It is school policy that hats should be worn from September 1st until May 1st whenever the children are outside at recess or lunch. Outside these times the wearing of a school hat is based upon the forecast UV rating. Foundation children have a light blue hat so that they are easy to identify in the playground.
Shoes
Parents are asked to give special attention to the shoes children wear to school. The uniform regulations specify black leather shoes. There are many styles on the market that fit this description, however parents are urged to avoid shoes that feature coloured stripes, logos or any other coloured decoration. Unless specifically authorised, (e.g. on Physical Education days) sneakers are not to be worn.
Socks
Specific attention is also drawn to the colour of the socks to be worn as part of the general uniform: pale blue for girls, grey for boys. Sacred Heart sports socks or plain white sports socks (with no logos or markings) are to be worn as part of the Physical Education uniform.
School Uniform Purchase
The Uniform Shop is run independently to the school through Totally Workwear. The shop is located at 87 Lime Ave, Mildura (Ph. 03 5021 4697).
Second Hand Uniform Shop
The Parents and Friends (P&F) operate a Second Hand Uniform shop. Opening hours are usually during our School Assembly times. All items for sale are donated and all proceeds go directly to the P&F to support our school. An order form is placed on our website https://www.shmildura.catholic.edu.au/school-uniform .
School Bags
School bags with the school emblem printed on them are available for purchase from Totally Workwear but are not compulsory.
Library Bags
All students require a Sacred Heart Library Bag (ordered through Totally Workwear) which is used to protect books borrowed from school as well as newsletters and other correspondence.
Lost Property
Please label ALL UNIFORM ITEMS with your child’s name. Lost property can be retrieved from breezeway between the courtyard and Olive Grove and if left unclaimed, will be donated to the second hand uniform shop.
Hair, Jewellery, Nail Polish & Make-Up
Students should keep their hair neat and tidy. Long hair that may cover the eyes must be tied back in a ponytail, plait, or similar style—this applies to both boys and girls. Hair accessories should be in the school colors: pale blue or navy blue.
Jewellery is generally not part of the school uniform, with a few exceptions:
- Earrings: Only plain studs (no glitter or dangling styles), with one stud per earlobe. No other piercings are allowed.
- Religious Medals: May be worn on a chain or pin but must be safe for play.
Nail polish and make-up are not allowed as part of the school uniform.
Arriving and Leaving Safely
Kiss & Go
To help keep everyone safe during drop-off and pick-up please take note of the following rules at Kiss and Go and the School Crossing that should be followed both in the morning (8:10-8:45am) and afternoon (3pm-3:30pm):
- Stay in your vehicle unless you need to assist younger students with their seat belts.
- Aim to keep your car in the Kiss & Go area for a maximum of two minutes to allow others to use the space too.
- Access the Kiss & Go only from Olive Grove, not 12th Street.
- Please refrain from dropping off students outside of cars in Olive Grove.
- Avoid performing U-turns within the Kiss & Go area.
- For your safety, use the school crossing if you need to cross 12th Street.
Thanks for helping us keep our school safe for everyone!

Pick Up and Drop Off Points
In the mornings, the Olive Grove gate will remain closed, so students and visitors can only enter through the 12th Street or Tamarisk Grove gates. After school, only the Olive Grove gate near the Art House will be open and supervised by a staff member. This change aims to enhance student and traffic safety.
Please ensure you find a suitable and permissible parking spot for your car in order to use these locations.

Riding Scooters & Bikes
Certain students walk, ride bikes, or scooters to school and are requested to use either the 12th Street entrance or the Tamarisk Grove entrance at the rear of the oval. Riding into or through the school grounds is not permitted.
Collect Children from School Grounds
Feel free to come into school to pick up your child directly from their classroom. It's an excellent opportunity to meet other parents, have casual conversations with teachers, and ensure your child is organised at the end of the day. If you choose this option, please park appropriately and be outside the classroom by the 3.10 bell; otherwise, your child will be directed to the supervised Kiss and Go area. Students and young siblings should refrain from using the playground equipment.
School Crossings
Students walking home are advised to use the school crossings on Twelfth Street, Walnut Avenue and Eleventh Street to safely avoid heavily trafficked roads. All crossings are supervised by a School Crossing Supervisor, and it's crucial to follow their directions. We also encourage parents to model expected behaviours by using the School Crossings also.
Buses
Several of our students catch buses home from the St. Joseph’s bus stop on 11th Street. Each day a teacher gathers these children together and accompanies them to the bus stop to supervise until they are all safely on the bus.
Drop Off Times
Preferred 'Drop Off' Time: 8.25 - 8.45 am. For safety reasons, please refrain from dropping off students before 8.19 am, as there is no supervision provided. Our gates open at this time.
Pick Up Times
Recommended 'Pick Up' Time: 3.10 - 3.25 PM. While we understand occasional delays, if regular or extending beyond 3.30 PM, please consider enrolling your child/ren in After School Care.
Walking or Riding Home
If your children walk or ride home or to your workplace after school, please submit written permission authorising them to leave unaccompanied. They must exit through the main 12th Street gate or accompany the 11th Street bus group through Tamarisk Grove.
Alternative Pick Up Places
For safety, we strongly advise against arrangements where children wait unsupervised at public pick-up locations like Walnut Avenue or St Joseph’s College.
EATING AND DRINKING AT SCHOOL
Healthy Eating
To sustain learning and promote healthy eating we encourage students to bring to school predominantly healthy food choices.
Brainfood
Students have a brain food break during the morning to keep children’s brains fuelled for learning. We ask that families send an extra fresh fruit or vegetable snack for children to have during this time. When sending the snack, please pack it separately from your child’s lunch in a small, named container so it can be placed on their desk each morning.

Lunch Snack
The main meal of the school day; a sandwich or roll, a salad or a slice of quiche. A healthy ‘treat’ may also be appropriate here that is healthy and gives long-term energy. Lunch is eaten usually in the classroom from 11:25am-11:40am.

Recess Snack
We encourage parents to pack fresh fruit or vegetables in your child’s recess snack box. You may like to pack one or two other snack items for them at this time. This snack is eaten at 1:40pm.

Packing Food
The school has a bank of refrigerators for the storage of students’’ food. For the ease of packing and unloading the fridges, we ask that parents provide separate, small, well-labelled containers or zip-lock bags for their child’s recess snack and lunch. Insulated ‘puffy’ lunchboxes and ice-blocks are not required.

School Canteen
Our School Canteen operates on a Wednesday and Friday and provides a range of lunch options at low cost. The current menu and prices can be accessed through and ordered via the CDFpay. This app is powered by Flexischools and you will need to create an account. Please download the CDF Pay App and ensure you create an account (the previous CDFPay doesn't transfer over to the app).
